"Hey all, I may have a problem here. I bought a water pump kit for my 1977 140 HP Evinrude, the part number was 395073, as called for in my OEM parts manual. The problem is that the impeller keyway on my outboard is teardrop shaped, like this:

and the impeller in the kit is square shaped, like this:

So, did I recieve the wrong impeller, or is the lower unit on my outboard from a different year, and if so, what year could it be from? The top end is definitely a '77, says so on the freeze plug. The strange thing is, the kit included a replacement teardrop shaped key.

Thanks,

Dan-"

" Thanks.. I did just that, the water pump listed for 1979-1991 motors fit just fine. Kind of good news in a way, as the newer style water pump is both much cheaper, and easier to find. As a side note, it took me just as long to line up and reconnect the shift linkage as it did too drop the lower unit and replace the pump. What asshat thought it was a good idea to place a frequently removed fastener in such a tiny crevice under the carbs?
Wish it was a two piece shift rod with an access plate to get at the connector, like in my 1968 kicker.

I have the same problem on my twin 235HP johnsons.Starting in the late 80's they changed the setup to where at least there was no screw to install below the carburetors.
