1977 135HP Tilt / Trim Issue

Hello
I have a 1977 Chrysler 135HP engine and was wondering if I took a vintage Tilt/Trim unit from a motor that has this if I could bolt it on to my motor. Mine is manual of course and has the 3 bolt holes on the side of the bracket where the motor bolts up. I am new to Chrysler motors and don't know much about them. My unit is manual and I want to add this to it so if I wonder if it is a direct bolt on piece or...

Thanks,
Nick

It should work if it's the same or close. What year? What year is the replacement. RRitt answers on this site he seems to know a lot about these.J

Hi Jerry,
Motor is a '77 and tilt/trim unit is a '76. Do you know the spread in years that would work for this motor? Also does it matter say if one is 135hp and the other is off a 75hp motor? So putting the tilt/trim unit off a 75 horse motor onto a 135 horse motor bracket assembly...

Thanks,
Nick

Any year will fit. All 3cylinder and larger systems except for a few 70HP used the same trim system. Any system fits any year prior to 1992. Even 2w. You just can't mix parts from one to the other. So if you start with 2w then you need to stick with 2w. If you decide to buy 3w then you need to stick with 3w parts for any future maintenance. I would buy 1981 or later if it was me and specifically look for 1989-1992 (the USMarine years).

Before 1981 prestolite used a brass seat with ball bearing as the back pressure check valve and the tilt ram used a rubber cap instead of a debris scraper. The good news is that both designs last longer. The bad news is that neither design uses industrial standards parts and neither design is fully rebuildable. The ram will need a new tilt head and the valve body will need new check valves. Neither item can be bought and would have to be cannabalized from a 1981-1992 system. So, if it was me, I would pass on a '77 unless it was just a super good deal.
