1976 Mercury 20 hp dies when put in reverse

1976 Mercury 200 20hp # 4406506. Tiller, Starts fine stays running when put in forward, but, kills when put in reverse.
Both cyl. working. can keep it running if I open the throttle as soon as I put it reverse.

Check for fishing line wrapped around the prop shaft behind the propeller. I've seen braided fishing line lock an engine down tight.

Check exhaust relief ?----Possibly plugged.
