The cotter pin broke and prop came off on the water. I'm wondering what parts I am missing? Here is a pic. The parts I brought to replace the missing parts are the nut, spacer and cotter pin. Is there anything else that goes there? Also I notice a crack in the lower unit near the prop shaft is this something I should worry about (see pics) I drained the lower unit oil it was low but no water in it. Has one small metal shaving in it.

Outer seal looks to be in backwards.---------Lower unit need to come apart for inspection.-------That crack will let water in and oil out.------You are also missing the thrust washer that the prop pushes on.

Thanks for the replies. Can the crack be repaired? maybe by welding it? Or is it a total loss on the lower unit? The motor runs fine. Ive owned it for about a month. Bought it non running. I got it going ( replaced starter, cleaner carbs, replaced ignition switch and steering cable). The motor was setting for a couple of years before I bought it. Could the oil be low because of the crack or just because it hasn't been changed in awhile? If the crack can not be repaired would it be ok to replace the lower unit oil and take it on the lake then when I get back home drain it and inspect the oil and go from there? If it cant be repaired I cant do anymore damage to the lower unit by using it?

This lower unit needs to be torn down for inspection.---See post # 3.--------Possible reason for the crack is a jammed up bearing.

How far should I take it apart? So if I replace the bearing carrier I might be able use my current lower unit even with the crack in it? Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help. Just realized that piece is replaceable I didn't know that until now. I found a used one for 50. I'm going to tear it down tomorrow and inspect it

As long as the bearings are good you should replace the back to back seals before you put it together and replace the large o-ring as well.

Just keep a eye on it the first few times out. When you get back wait a day if possible and then bottom drain it to see if any water is getting in. Just pull the drain plug momentarily to see if water comes out. I keep a oil can with gearoil in it to top it off with the upper hole. You allways want to store it in the running position so it completely drains between uses anyways.
