1976 Johnson 85HP 85EL76G Temp question

When I run my engine on trailor with water ears for maybe 5 minutes at idle and occassional going from idle to run it seems that the engine gets to hot. Seems to be steam coming from everywhere around the engine and engine gets very hot to touch in a short amount of time. There isn't any free standing water. Maybe there was some water sprinkles that shot up from putting engine in gear that got on the engine. But the amount of steam or smoke seems more than I remmeber. I can't say that I have had the engine cover off in the past looking for this but I had some issues with getting the engine started this year so I have been seeing the engine when running more then in the past. Do these engines heat up very fast even at idle (way to hot to touch). These engines are air cooled no radiator. Is there a water pump that pumps water that helps cool these engines.

I have not had it on the lake yet this season I want to make all is good before I take it out. Last year it ran good all season with the esception of hard to start.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have the service manual but does not really talk about this issue.

First V-4 motors do not get along well with the muffs.........

Have you ever changed the thermostats how about the water deflectors? They are VERY important to good V-4 health.

I just got the manual today but I don't see anything called water deflectors. how do you know if the thermostat is bad or the water pump or both?

Where would you get the idea that these motors " are air cooled "------------If it was run out of the water , then the water pump has been destroyed.------------Time do report the #'s of a compression test.--------------Head gaskets will need to be replaced as well.--------------Time the drop the lower unit and install a new water pump.------------Hopefully you have not destroyed the motor.

Unless the water pump went bad on me last year and I did not know it I have only ran the motor with the water muffs this year at maybe 3 to 5 minutes at a time for only several times when I noticed the motor getting hotter then normal. Then I started questioning this and went online to forums. I don't think I have ruined anything. I am wondering if it is possible to tell if the thermostat is bad or if the water pump is bad.

Put a new waterpump impeller in it.------------Check thermostat / vernatherm in boiling water as well , they rarely fail closed but who knows.-----Blown head gaskets will cause overheat as well.-----Have head bolts been retorqued lately ??

So that is all I need to order is the impeller. When I take the bottom unit apart are there gaskets that I will want to replace as I am putting it all back together?

I have not retorqued the head bolts lately. Actually I have never tighten them since I bought the boat about 3 years ago.

If they are a lot less that 240 inch-lbs you might want to consider replacing the head gaskets.------------No gaskets needed to replace the impeller.

So on a one to ten scale ten being the hardest how difficult is it to take the bottom end off to replace the water pump. I have never worked on one of these. I have rebuilt car engines so I am not clueless. Are there any secrets to doing this or don't make this type of mistake? Can I do this with the motor on the trailor OK?

Diconnect the shift rod under / near the bottom carburetor ( 5/8" wrench required ) on the pivot bolt.-----------Take out the bolts for the lower unit including the one under the trim tab.------Nothing to it at all.
