1976 Johnson 70hp wonbt start

"Hi all,
New to this forum and need help. I have a 1976 Johnson 70EL76 motor that won't start. I can jump it to start it, but the command center console won't start it when I turn the key on. I was told it's probably the neutral safety switch has gone bad...how do I go about replacing this switch inside the command center? Thanks in advance for any help.

"try to start,while slowly moving shifter a small amnt,to f and rev,just to see if u can activate it...if it cranks,in an off neutral area,..then,either bad switch,or loose,switch...loose,is the usual case."

The engine wanted to start when moving the shifter a little...so I took it apart and found that when you hold the white switch in it would want to start, but the switch did not appear loose...I'm currently charging the battery and tomorrow will reassemble the command center to see if cleaning and lubing will help.
