1976 Johnson 70hp outboard - throttle/shifter issues

So I recently acquired 76 Johnson 70 hp outboard motor and finally got it running pretty well. I was having issues with the propeller slipping so I bought a new one and recently put it on and took it out to the lake today. I noticed that my shifter had a big gap between idle and actually engaging and propelling forward. I went to open it up all the way and when I was trying to slow back down it just stayed at very high RPMs and wouldn’t go back into neutral. When I would get close to neutral it would try to shift into reverse and hard jerk into it as well. I ended up turning off the engine and messing with the throttle shifter a bit to be able to get it back to where I could turn it on and it wouldn’t be revving extremely high. I ordered a manual a week ago and it should be here tomorrow to kind of help me get a better idea of how to adjust these things but I figured it can’t hurt to ask others as I haven’t found many videos on how it’s done on an outboard the same year or close to mine. I’ve also read that there might be an issue with the linkage so any idea of how to adjust that on my specific outboard would be great.

First thing to check is to remove cowling on your outboard and have your wife or a helper operate the control with the motor off. Check for any slack in movement. My guess is a problem within the control. Last year I had a pontoon with a 75 Stinger, I had to replace both cables......rusty.

well I did that already when I was stuck out on the water after killing the engine when it was high revving and there isn’t any slack on the lines they’re all pretty tight. Now for the rust not sure about that gonna check that out tomorrow. And this is a 76 and I’m sure the lines have never been replaced so that is probably what I’m going to do. Where did you order yours? And I’m guessing it would be best to get both lines shifter and throttle correct? Also the shifter is pretty hard to move and seems like quite a bit of delay between acceleration and how far the shifter is forward.

If you decide on cables call Tim's Outboard in Hackensack MN. 218 682 2331. Know your cable length. On your particular motor, I have had to dismantle the throttle arm and clean, then re lube the pivot stem and related moving parts. The aluminum will wear, then mix with the old lube, causing it to bind and stick.

so I’ve decided to get new cables. Did u record a video or know of one showing how to change them on a Johnson same or close year as mine (1976)? Not sure what u mean by pivot stem and dismantle and cleaning it but I would like to do that as well I just don’t want to mess anything up. Also I need to figure out which one is the throttle cable and which one is the shifter cable. Got the manual but it doesn’t say anything about maintaining and changing out those cables.

Was that the year that they recalled and replaced all the remote controls under warranty? Problems with part numbers 37 and 95 ?? I remember changing out a bunch of controls, but don't remember exactly why.

hell im not sure but that sure would be nice if they covered that under a warranty lol. I’m gonna take a look at them today and order some online. You guys know about how long they should be? I wanna take it out later so I don’t wanna remove them just yet. I was thinking 15 feet should be more than enough? I can attach some pictures of the throttle and cables as well they look pretty rusted and worn on the outside I’m sure the inside is similar considering they’re 44 years old.
