Hi all, new to forum and specifically boating and boat motors in general. Just purchased an older center console boat with this motor. Motor by itself runs great. Many of the secondary system components replaced and or repaired. Trying to trouble shoot an issue when prop is engaged. Not sure if it is at the motor or in the throttling lever/assembly, or transmission.
When engaging, it shifts in fine, but pushing the lever and throttling up, after engaged, seems to be inconsistent. If i push quickly, it wants to "get there real fast" and will bring the nose up too quick. pushing in with purpose at a slower rate, it just doesnt feel like it want to go and tops out or comes up short when the lever is fully actuated. Very inconsistent and feels like i continually have to play with it.
Do i just have to find the "sweet spot" and making a novice mistake or is their something i can do to try and resolve?
I have not pulled the lever/throttle assembly and controls or dissassembled anything. Other than to start engine and actuate the controls.
What actuates the transmission from the controls?
Im not new to engines in general and have worked on various motors and equipment with electrical and hydraulics. All professionally. For some context for a good response.
Thanks.

Looks like i may have found the culprit. Anyone know how to repair or reseat a new brass end on cable cover? I am a little apprehensive about snaking in a new cable assembly, but maybe i need to.

Use the old cables to pull in the new ones.----Or use a " fish " to pull the cables.
That's what i was thinking. Thanks. I did confirm there is a metal tray that runs straight back to transom and some access section can be lifted out in front of transom.

Replace both cables
Im up in the air on that. The cable that runs to the throttle linkage looks to have been replaced at some point and definitely newer than cable running to transmission linkage. I think I ve found them, 33 or 3300 series. Still trying to work out 12ft., 13ft., or 14ft.

Also, looking at adapter or end styles, it appears to be post 1979 style with the 4" long black barrel on the motor side and thin silver tongue lever side.
I can not seem to find an example of the top mount console control lever style I have. There are a lot of variations to figure out. Luckily West Marine is close and may need to contact to find out exactly what I need.

it's a Morse control box, with unique attachments, I would purchase their extreme control cables. they are the best in the business.

Thanks. That helped immensely. I had seen a dual lever, but did not find any single until I searched "morse control box".

My question now is type of cable. The motor side is definitely post 1979.
I did video underneath the console and the back side of control box. Unfortunately, I can not tell the type of end. All I can see is a brass rod/tube that terminates in a black plastic block on the one side. Im thinking the spade end with hole is probably inside there. It doesnt appear that the pre-sliced house owner did any type of work to the cables or the control box. Im guessing I know why.
Before ordering a post 1979 OMC control cable, I'd like to confirm it's going to work.
I originally thought that the 33 or 3300 universal was right, but this doesnt have the motor end connections. Do these connections disassemble from the cable?
Hopefully someone has knowledge to lend here. I hate tearing something down and then trying to figure out and parts before ordering. I would prefer getting info up front and having parts at the ready before repair, if at all possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.
In the interim I may try to 3d print a two piece plastic tube/guide to protect the small exposed portion of cable and help keep it centered moving thru the brass collar that is supposed to be swaged on the end of the cable sleeve, to keep it from hanging up and/or shearing in something.
You would think they would sell the brass swage collars, but i also imagine trying to swage onto the cable sleeve is a delicate operation.Too much and cable will not actuate correctly. Too little and it pull out again.

Looks like CC170 cables should give the correct cable end for a 1976 model
As i said the motor side is post 1979, unless the black barrel is removable and can be reinstalled on the bare cable end. I do not see a slot or any way to remove it and reinstall though.
Again not familiar with this type of cabling, so if im missing something, please let me know.
It appears to type 479 or omc post 1979. I was looking at ordering ccx20512, 12ft extreme.
The control side does appear to have some unique attachments or one specific connecting end in particular. I have not identified which is throttle and which is shift.

I guess at this point I am considering replacing the control box along with the cables. Call me simple, but wondering why the single lever, dual action instead of dual lever single action. It just seems like it would be more straight forward and less mechanically problematic. Put it in gear and then throttle. I would imagine it more straight forward and less likely to cause transmission issues, locking it in gear before throttling.

I've run the Morse single lever MT control boxes for over 50 years, single and twin engine installations, probably the most reliable control box in the world. Pull the handle out for neutral throttle only, let lit drop back in at idle and shift gears. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater! It's a very good box. The cables are universal, just get the correct control end connection for the engine. This is not rocket science...
