i'm needing to put in a new water pump kit. There is a bolt under the carb according to people whom have done it. where exactly is this bolt that releases the shaft. thanks

Wrong-----You need a 5/8" wrench to loosen a bolt on the intake manifold.----You find it beside the carburetor on the starboard side.------Then spread those 2 arms to release the shift rod.-----There is a wee plastic bushing in the adapter on top of the shift rod.----It may get damaged during removal or installation.---So work carefully.

Pertaining to the small white nylon bushing/bearing in that barrel assembly screwed into the top of the shift rod.... That bushing absolutely must be installed or it will be impossible to adjust the shift properly.

Also.... the barrel adjustment is simply to screw it all the way down, then back it up only to it's normal position.

Thank you, I figured that out now I just need to know how to drop it. Ive taken out six bolts that I can find. it's loosened but still won't slide out!

Take your time do not try and force it it could be the driveshaft splines are rusted in the crank. Hang a cinder block a couple inches off the ground and walk away from it let gravity do the work.

I figure there are 7 bolts.

4 bolts, two on each side
1 bolt forward of the trim tab
1 bolt holding the trim tab
1 bolt in the cavity above the removed trim tab.

You probably have them all, since it is loose.

Has it come down at all ?---Say 1/2" or more ?----The adapter on top of the shift rod needs to come through a hole that may be corroded.----I am not there to inspect just giving a suggestion here.

ok I finally got it down. nobody told me it has to be in reverse to get it to drop. I got the new impeller kit in. On this new housing there is a rubber seal that would not stay in. I finally just put a clear RTV sealant in the groove and put it together. Now I have it running and water is squirting out of a couple places around the top of lower unit which is probably because the sealant didn't work. also after starting and running it a gray grease is all around the inside of the prop where the exhaust comes out.
What do I do now?

Sorry -----But it does NOT have to be in reverse to remove that lower unit.-----Some of us have done this simple job many times !!

Do you agree that it does NOT have to be in reverse to drop down , yes or no.--Did you read post # 2 carefully ?--Post # 13 seems to indicate that you think we do not know your motor !

all I am saying is I tried everything including tying a concrete block to the thing and after five days it didn't move. I had a buddy come over and he had a youtube video where it said to put it in reverse so we did that and it dropped right down. it all works great now except the water squirting out around the space between the gearcase and exhaust housing and the watery grease coming out the exhaust onto the inner prop.
