Hello I have a 1976 6hp. It will start right up and idle great. I can start to go and when I speed it up and get on top it kicks and starts to rev high rpm's and won't go anywhere as if I stuck it in neutral. But it's in forward. They prop is not spun. Any ideas or suggestions?

You may have a bad forward gear and clutch dog or loose shift linkage. Also bad drive shaft splines.

Yes sir the shift thing stays in forward when I kicks out, and it's not the prop because it has a shear pin and it's not broken. And yes I have tried holding the forward shift down, just seems to happen when I get up to plane or high rpm.
When the engine is in neutral is the shift handle straight up? Engine off spin the prop as you shift gears, th forward and reverse from the neutral positione shift handle should move the same distance. Have you tried holding the shift handle forward and see if it stays in gear? Pull the prop and put a mark across the prop and hub and then make it slip and then pull the prop and see if the mark still lines up. It could be a loose shift rod coupler or improperly installed coupler keeping it from going all the way into gear. Drain the gearcase and look for metal fragments in the oil. Drain it with the large flat tip screwdriver plug do not remove the phillips pivot pin in the very bottom of the gearbox. Let us know if you figure it out!

I didn't know you a prop can spin a hub if it has a shear pin. But ok thand I will check it out! I would love to have this little motor running again. It was such a work horise and gas sipper
I would be willing to bet it is the prop has a spun hub. There is a bushing between the prop and the hub the pin goes through. Pull the prop and scribe a mark through the center of the prop and hub and take it out until it slips again and then check the scribe marks if it moved you need a new prop. If the scribe marks are still lined up you need to pull the gearbox apart and check the forward gear and clutch dog.

Ok I checked it day and that's not the problem, the prop is good. I'm starting g think is the dogs. So I will start to go down the list of most possible problems.
You used to be able to get a new bushing pressed in if you have a prop shop close maybe they still do. Confirm it first as a new prop is pretty spendy. I wouldnt buy used as you buying someone elses problem more than likely.
