I AM WORKING ON THIS OLD MOTOR .I picked it up as a part motor and decided to try and get it running.I removed flywheel and gaped points 2p thousands with it in neutral and timing not advanced.I read Manuel and it said it should be in forward with the timing fully advanced .Will this make a difference. Also compression was 103 exactly the same on both cylinders is this enough .Motor has not run in years.

Actually it does not matter where you set the points.----- Idle or full throttle.------It does not matter as long as you use the proper gap of 0.020" or a timing fixture and the marks. -----Some might argue but it does not matter.

Putting it at full throttle helps keep it from moving while you work on it. That's the only reason I can come up with.
