I just got this boat and motor and the guy told me the flywheel was bad it kept shearing key so I bought a new key tighten it really good with a impact got motor started sure enough sheared key so I looked at model and part number on flywheel and it's a pull start flywheel on a electric start motor can anyone help me trying to figure out what's going on

Facts--------The flywheel key locates it for proper ignition timing.----------The flywheel is driven by the locking tapers.------You must use a factory replacement part and not a hardware store " looks the same " item.-------Tapers are now likely damaged.---------Now you must use some valve grinding compound to lap /grind the tapers together for a perfect match.--------------Clean off all traces off compound.

The shaft is good but if you look at the flywheel taper for the key looks to be worn but what's the difference between the two flywheel electric start and pull start cause the motor has a pull start flywheel part number on it but the motor is electric start wanting to buy new flywheel but want to make sure I buy the right one

I get that but when you look at the key slot on the flywheel on one side it has a nice edge and on the otherside at the top it has a nice edge and about a 1/8 inches down it slightly rounded and you can see where it has been shearing the keys but I just talk to a outboard mechanic and he said it could have jumped timing and that's why it could be shearing keys any comments on this ?

Order the OEM flywheel key and pull the points plate. Wrap a thin oil soaked rag around the crank and push it tight against the seal then take a fine flat file and knock off any burr you find on the taper. I just put a piece of 220 grit in the flywheel taper and clean it up some as well. Then lap it with valve grinding compound if necessary you can tell by just placng the flywheel on the crank and press down at different spots it will wiggle if there is a burr. It is real important to torque it 105 foot lbs do not estimate torque value or you will be doing it again. If the flywheel has six magnets it is for the lighting circuit

The flywheel key and point gap is ignition timing. With the external coils set the point gap at exactly .022 is usually best for a field setting but is allways best to use a timing light to adjust the points. You need to check adjust sync and link best with flywheel off.
sync or throttle pickup is when the mark on the throttle cam is center of the roller at that point the carb should just begin to open
link is after you adjust sync loosen the screw in the collar and in fwd gear engine off advance the throttle to WOT. Hold the carb open to its stop and push the collar up to the pivot pin and tighten the screw. It holds the carb wide open.

There are two marks on the outer edge of the points plate and two marks on the flywheel 180 degrees out shine the timing light at the marks on the plate and the mark on the flywheel needs to be in between the two marks on the plate.
