1976 Evinrude 2602S 2hp Outboard Motor issues

I just purchased the above listed motor, knowing it wouldneed some work. It wasn't running when I got it, pretty cheap. I cleaned andrebuild the carb, no luck, tested the spark... it is intermittent, had troublegetting the flywheel off, but did and cleaned the points. It started right up.Ensured I mixed the fuel right with marine oil and it ran well. Also installeda new water pump. Ran the motor at the lake and after about 200 yds it boggedand stopped. It almost seemed like it was seized. I got it back to the dock putoil in the cylinder and let it soak worked it free and decided to try again. Itran fine again until it was heating up I assume. It did seem to be spittingwater from the port you would expect with the exhaust so I think water wasgoing through it, but now I am considering rebuilding the whole thing or atleast replacing the head gasket and some other gaskets to make sure the wateris going where it should. Any one know if I am on the right path or have someother suggestions? The second time it started to run more rough after a fewminutes and I shut it down before it got the same point. My guess is that it isovereating, but I am unsure where to start from here.

My guess is the water tube is rubbing on the spinning drive shaft, which wore a hole through it and water is spilling out the side instead of going up through the powerhead as it should.

My second guess is the rubber grommet at the top end of the water tube is rotted or burned away.

Whatever the case, after running it to seizure at least once (or more) has probably scored the piston. That means rebuild time. You can look for the first and second guesses as you do. And of course replace all the gaskets.
