1976 evinrude 20 Hp water pump replacement

Hi,

I have a 1976 evinrude 20 Hp (model#206B62D) and am working on replacing the water pump. The shift linkage screws are behind the exhaust plate. I have tried removing the lower screw and both the lower and upper screw to pull out the lower assembly. With either screw removed, the lower assembly will only come out about 3/4 inch before it is stopped. I am not sure what is stopping it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

It should pull down now.-----Perhaps a hefty screwdriver and a wee bit of force is needed.

I agree, I put my weight behind it and when it stops it seems to be hitting something that is metal, by the sound it makes. I don't think there is a pin stopping it.
