1976 Evinrude 175 shifting question

Been having a little problem

Been having a little problem with motor shifting into foward gear. When I push throttle to shift into foward it does not engage right off. It makes a grinding sound and after a couple or three seconds then it engages. Reverse works fine no grinding. If I push the throttle a little further past slow idle in foward then it engages right off but with a little jerk. Thanks in advance.

" 1976 175hp ?? They did not make it in 76.You must not do the "granny" shifting on an outboard, you slam it into gear for best results and least damage to the gears and clutch dog. "

" cooper,I have a 76 Johnson 85 HP and I have the same problem. I'am researching the proplem also.
I will let you know what I find out.I think it has something to do with a worn clutch dog. "
