1976 Evinrude 135 hp shift problems

OK guys and gals, I have a 76' 135 that I can't seem to get in reverse. New shift and throttle cables, new shift seal, fresh fluid in lower unit (dextron), I can get forward no problem, when I try reverse I have to just touch the linkage at the motor and it engages reverse. Now, I adjust the shift cable 2-3 turn at the trunion and get the opposite, Reverse but have to help with forward. I'm out of ideas here. I can't find much information about the shift assist in this outboard. Any help?

Thank you!

Sounds like the lower unit has been off and the top "barrel" screw on connection is either out of adjustment OR (and most likely) the nylon bushing is missing from that barrel connector. If that bushing is missing, there is no way you can adjust the shift properly. Bushing is part number 318590 .

Barrel adjustment?.... The barrel needs top be screwed all the way down, then backed up just to its proper position.

Thanks for the fast reply joereeves! See, I thought the same. I did just put a new water pump in it. The bushing is there and not damaged. I'll get a new one anyways. I just got this for my pontoon and been fighting this since. Hey, it was free! I did learn about the barrel, it is down all the way and only turned up till it faced the right way. I really wish that was the fix. I'm almost tempted to go in the gear case but not sure if I want to open that can of worms.
