1976 99 long shaft Will not shift into forward

"I have a 1976 9.9 long shaft

"I have a 1976 9.9 long shaft Johnson outboard. I can not get the motor to shift into forward gear. I removed the lower unit and I can pull up on the gear shaft and get it in reverse and back down to neutral, but can not get it in forward. What would cause this? Everything else works fine, the shifter up top clicks into gear smooth and solid with the lower unit removed. Which leads me to believe the problem is in the lower gear case. If it is , is this best left to a professional outboard mechanic?"

"Sounds like you've got to get in there to find out whats wrong. Something preventing the dog clutch sliding into engagement with the forward gear or something wrong with the yoke and dog cradle.
With the whole LU off you did try rotating the prop while trying to engage it didn't you. It is only a dog clutch so it wont necessarily engage while all the bits are stationary.

Whether you have ago at it yourself or pay someone else is up to you. Nothing particularly difficult or mysterious in there. A manual would be advisable, but i took mine to bits without just to find out how it all worked!

"i have the same problem , i pulled the lower gears out and turned the dogs around and it works better, but my shift shaft is still to short to hook up top,can i take out the adjustment screww and turn it down or something?"

thread shft rod,w/conn,into shift lever yoke until seated,back out just enough so lever faces forward,and flat sd of conn is faces d-shaft.put in neautral,measure from top of conn to flat surface of gearcase,--should be between 5/16 min to 11/32" max,adj shift rod as necc."
