"Hi,
Have a '76 Johnson that will not allow the shift lever to move forward or reverse. It will start & run, just can't move the FWD/REV as you should. Do I take it into the shop or is there an easy/reasonable fix for a non-mechanic like myeself. Any help appreciated. Thanks"

"Do you know if anyone has removed the phillips screw in the lower unit, since the last time it worked properly?

This screw is the pivot screw that the shift lever pivots on to push or pull the clutch dog into the various gears.

Does the shifter itself move or is it stuck?"

Thanks for the info. I don't believe anyone removed the Phillips screw in the lower unit. It was worked on by a shop about 2+ years ago. The shift is basically stuck
 
So remove the lower unit to de

So remove the lower unit to determine if it is the lower unit or linkages on the motor.
