1976 70hp Manual question?

I need a manual fo a 76' 70 HP Evinrude. These are expensive. There are many 76' 75 HP manuals on Ebay for 1/2 the price. Would I be kicking myself getting a 75 vs. the 70 that I need?

My 73' 65HP manual is a little different.

I have a wiring issue (previous owner installed a homemade anit theft etc.) I cannot get 12V onto the charge coil of the solenoid.
One of those pins on the connector must send 12V back to the control box, yes?

I am using my known good controls for testing. The control box that came with the engine is the same.

Re: 1976 Manual question?

Pertaining to a Factory OMC "Service Manual", NOT a "Parts Manual", the difference between a 70hp and a 75hp is so small that the difference can be ignored. However, if you are speaking of a third party manual of any type, I suggest that you obtain the exact model manual you're looking for.

Home made anti theft setup? Why not contact the previous owner? If unable..... 12 volts should be available at the "B" terminal of the ignition switch.

When the ignition switch is in the START position, 12 volts should be present at the "S" terminal of the ignition switch and a "white" wire should be connected to that "S" terminal that leads directly to one of the 3/8" nuts on the starter solenoid. A "black" wire should be connected to the other 3/8" nut terminal of the solenoid which connects to a powerhead ground.

As I recall, the 12V comes from the engine, goes through the harness to the controls, and back to the solenoid. Make sure the fuse under the hood hasn't blown. And you may also want to check the neutral safety switch (in the controls) which keeps the engine from turning over when in gear.

Thanks again as usual. I found the offending wires. A pair in a ring terminal should be attached to the 12V where the battery meets the solenoid. I will start this weekend and winterize.
Joe, yes I was talking factory manuals. I purchased from the son-in-law of the original owner whom I assume just died. He cut some wires, removed engine from boat, and mounted a 140.
