I have a 1976 ... 65hp outboard # 50-65436 ... with a new starter that won't start ... you hit the key ... the starter spins , but he gear that comes up and turns the fly wheel spins , but does not spin UP and make contact with the flywheel ....starting the motor .... am I doing something wrong ? Any help would be great ....
Thanks Doug

Shoot some penetrating oil on the starter shaft and work the gear up and down manually.

If that won't do it, the starter is shot--not making enough torque to throw the gear up there.

You can also disconnect the starter terminals and attach a voltmeter. Have someone turn the key, and make sure you are getting 12v to the starter. If less than 12v, it may be the starter solenoid.

It was the solenoid .... it had me fooled as it was letting some voltage threw , but not enough ... works like a camp now...
Thanks Guys ....
