We have a 1976 165hp 6 cylinder with 611 hours-- yes that is correct.

Today we were running it and the engine temp is around 160 and the WOT around 180-- then it will cool down when we return to idle. However, today we ran it WOT for about 20 minutes and it smelled VERY HOT- there was some - like oil burning coming from the exhaust side near the tappet cover and the engine made some funny sounds.

The oil is clear -- NO milky looking anything
Starts wonderful
Idles great

EVERYTHING on the engine - except the rountine items is original.

It seems that the engine isn't getting enough water to keep it really cool. Is it possible that somthing is cloged? Where do i look?

Any ideas.

Thanks

The long hose that comes into the t-stat from the transom, remove it at the t-stat housing, with water going to the drive start the boat and hold the hose staright up.
How high is the water shooting up. Do it for only 3 seconds and shut it down the motor.

Re: 165 hp that is running hot

Plenty of water coming out of the inlet hose to the t-stat. I removed the thermostat and the engine ran very cool. However, the engine will just stop for no reason. It will start right back up again it feels like it is starving for fuel or that electricial connection got messed up. While I was running it the engine would jerk loose about 50 rpms

Re: 165 hp that is running hot

ok disconnect the battery and follow the neg cable to the ground on the block, remvoe and clean.

Follow the pos cable at every connection clean. Don;t forget the starter.

The wore to the coil good? How about under the cap of the dist.

Pull apart the main barrel plug and clean in there.

Ok your battery cables are good cause you checked them. The key switch has good connection on the back? You got a kill switch jump it.

Now run it. Still doing it ?

That burning smell might be the riser is half clogged up. And the rubber tube is melting maybe. Or the flapper is burning.
