1976 115hp wont go into gear

We have this pontoon boat for

We have this pontoon boat for about 5 years And recently we were having trouble getting it in to gear but now it wont go at all We have taking the cable loose and it vibrates alot trying to get it in manually.Reverse seems alittle easier.Any thoughts and what kind of job is it?

That is the hydro-mechanical shift.It is not going to get better / cheaper if you keep going.Time to pull it apart to check for damaged oil pump and other components.

"and you are gonna have to find u a 40+ year old mech that even knows what all those doo-hickeys in there do...it is an excellent unit...but needs rebuilding thorougly to achieve good results,and furthur longevity..this one,i would consider as not a home repair..when working right those units shift sweeeeet!!"
