The problem - wont shift into reverse. If I adjust the cables so I can shift into reverse I cannot shift into forward.
Have replaced the following - both cables, and are on the third lower unit. Many mechanics have spent many hours and I have spend lots of $'s. Motor runs great either direction, but no one can get the shifting part to work. Seems as though the "throw" on the shifter rod is not long enough? I can't believe that all 3 lower units were bad, unless this is a "known" problem. Any suggestions?

These units are very good, very reliable.----What is the total travel of the shift cable from full forward to full reverse in inches ?--Has anyone shifted this motor with shift cable disconnected and shifting directly at the motor ??-----Is the motor running when you try and shift ??-----------Or is the prop being turned when you try and shift this motor.----------This motor when running uses oil pressure to assist in the shifting.-------Has anyone tried to adjust the coupling on the end of the shift rod.-------Answers required.

The barrel at the top of the shift rod has no adjustment BUT must be screwed all the way down, then simply backed up to its aligned position

Now..... I strongly suspect that you do no have the small bushing #318590 installed in the hole of that shift barrel. Without it, a small amount of play exists, and that small amount of play (believe it or not) makes it impossible to have that lower unit shift properly.
