I have the OMC 225 inboard. When I hook a hose to it I get water to my engine and it cools. When I put the outdrive in a tank I get no water to the thermostat housing. I do have a stream coming out behind where the hose in the pic is sticking out. I’m told that means the water pump in the outdrive IS pumping. Is that true? This is what I need answered please.

I am a newbee, but do have some experience with this, having rebuilt my 1976 OMC outdrive with a Ford 302. Water will come out at the bottom of the outdrive from the hose, or from the impeller pushing water through the engine. It does not necessarily tell you what shape the impeller is in.
I am not sure why you would get one, but not the other. If you have the manual from Marine engines.com you could m,aybe understand the water flow through the engine and see where it may be plugged. You probably have a Chevy 305, so you also have a waterpump on the engine - maybe it is bad. Have you tried it in a lake or the ocean?
I usually use both a tank and a hose when I am starting my engine up while out of the water.

I have since found out that the outdrive won’t pump out of a tank, it has to be in the lake for the impeller pump to work properly. Which I did not know. I took the drive apart and the impeller needs changing 2 of the wings were broke off. So good I’m getting that looked after.
Previously I had hooked a garden hose to the supply water line I took off at the thermostat housing, coming off the intermediate housing and blew water in reverse and had pretty good flow coming out at the pickup screen on the drive. So I will get it back together take it to the lake and see if it’s working, which I expect it will.
