"I have a 1975 Merc and it was running fine, when I heard a loud pop, and it died, It won't start, I think it has something to do with the throttle, because I shifted into forward, and it didn't engage right away. When it finally did it poped and died. The prop is new, and it spins freely when in gear (forward only) Please help!!!"

"Will the engine crank and not

"Will the engine crank and not start? Or, it won't crank because it's stuck in forward? Loud pop could be the L/U vertical shaft snapped. Drop the L/U and take a look."

"Engine will crank, not start.

"Engine will crank, not start. It's not stuck in forward because it shifts to neutral and reverse. When I had it running, I adjusted the shift cable and it died when I had it too tight. thanks again for any help you can give me. I'll look to see if shaft has snapped."

Did the shift cable break? Does it shift extra easy now? Check the ignition momentary kill switch activated when shifting from neutral to forward/reverse. If the switch arm's roller is not in the cam groove it will never start. If the shaft snapped you should be able to turn the prop both directions in forward and reverse.

I was going to try the cables and then check for engine problems. Like the coil, or the points, etc... You are talking about the switch inside the shift box, right??? Again I thank you for all your help."

""You are talking about the switch inside the shift box, right???"

No. That is the neutral safety switch. It's where the shift cables and throttle cables connect."
