Hello. New to forum. Lots of good info here I have researched and appriciate. I do though have a gears question for the proficient accomplished machanics.
I have a 1975 Johnson 25 HP, model 25502.
Clutch dog and forward gear parts seem to interchange from years 1971 to 1978.
Clutch dog p/n is 0316501 superceded by p/n 0390030.
Forward gear p/n is 0384566 superceded by p/n's 390972, 391085 & 0389236.
Now the question:
Do you know if all these numbers are correct p/n's for my motors clutch dog and forward gears? I'm looking to replace the worn ones and I don't want to purchase anything that won't correctly fit. There are items out there with these numbers at different prices and I'm looking to save $ but dont want wrong parts.
Thank you for any and all information provided.

Bill

I believe you need to be careful here with parts.-------There was an update kit available that had a roller needle bearing and roller thrust bearing for the new forward gear.

Ok, so searching the site I found that all my numbers are supposed to be correct as they were replaced by each other. These parts in like new or new condition are not easy to come by, inexpensively.
I need to replace them as it's coming out of gear. Even though the parts are not beat up they are rounded edged in the forward position.

Questions for the Master Mechanics of these motors; (Hopefully not dumb questions)

Can the newer years three lug clutch dog, gears and everything be put in place of the original two lug parts? Will the gear case accept the newer parts? Because they are much easier to find and look like rounded edges, (jumping out of gear), would be much less a factor.
If not, will a newer year complete lower end, with all the three lug component’s, bolt up to the older motor shaft, and work, without trouble?
Thereby making my 1975 good motor run with newer easier to find bottom end replacement parts.

No responses yet to replacing existing componants with newer style. So was this a dumb question by me as it cannot be done?

those parts are very easy to find in NOS or good used condition, where have you been looking? the parts are on this site along with 100 other sites...

As answer to your 'dumb' question:
2-lugs gear/dog must be replaced with 2-lugs. Ig going 3-lugs from 2, you will have to change forward - reverse and dog.
