1975 Evinrude Water pump issues

I removed the lower unit today to resolve a non pumping issue. Removed the bolts, loosened the shift rod connector, and proceeded to pull it out. The drive shaft stayed in the upper unit instead of staying with the lower unit. Everything I've read and seen shows the shaft staying with the lower unit.

Should I try and remove the shaft from the upper unit and reinsert into the lower unit to allow for proper reassembly? By the way, I think the impeller had been installed without a key so it was not spinning-problem!

Unit is model: 40EL75C 40 HP

Also, does this site sell the water pump gaskets separately?

You'll have to get the shaft out of c/s to put the water pump together properly. Try clamping a vise-grips on it in a nonsealing area and give it a few wacks with a hammer. Also try to get some PB Blaster up in the where the d/s and c/s meet.

Thanks man, that's what I figured. I'm thinking ill have to replace seals as well as gear lube was milky.
