I have a 1975 135 horse Evinrude and I pulled the flywheel. After putting in back on the stator started to smoke and some sparks came from underneath it.The flywheel appears to be slightly off but it almost appears that the crankshaft has become slighlty loose. Is there possibly a bearing that could have gone out or is the flywheel not seated back on the shaft properly? What can I do to correct the problem?

Did you put the flywheel on and engage the key properly?? If not you now have a problem.

"Craig..... The slot on the flywheel must be aligned with the key in the crankshaft when it is installed. The straight portion of that key (called flywheel key) should be vertical with the engine, not aligned with the crankshaft taper.

The flywheel nut on that model must be torqued to exactly 105 foot pounds, otherwise the key will shear which will cause damage to the flywheel and crankshaft tapers.

If you've already damaged those tapers, remove the stator and timer base etc so that you can clean up the tapers as good as possible and install a new key.
