Hello all, new to the forum. Ive been reading for a while now and finally decided to registed.

I am new to boating and new to outboards. I recently bought a small bass boat with a bad engine. I got a deal on a 1975 evinrude 85 that had been taken off a pontoon to upgrade to a 115hp. The 85 sat for about 7 months and got it on a steal... i finally got it on the boat but it will crank all day and not start. I got new plugs and fuel, checked and the plugs had spark. I have ordered a carb kit and hope that fixes the issue but i was hoping to find some insight here. Also, it will go forward and neutral but wont go into reverse. Before i install the engine it was going into it no issue. When i installed the cable it also worked a couole times then completely stopped...

Any advice would be greatly apprecited.

First off, check your compression. Then check your spark with an open air gap spark tester. Should jump a 7/16" gap.

Best to have the motor running in order to shift properly !

Gotcha i'll try it again once i can get it running. I just don't understand why it wont shift into reverse at all when before it was doing it with no issue. it was all with the engine not running....

Rgr, I will do that this coming weekend. I have ordered the tools i need in order to accomplish this. Thank you Boobie

You can damage the control box and the shift servo by forcing it into reverse gear with motor not running or prop not turning.----Just one of those things you have to learn and accept with that motor and many others.

understood, i will keep that in mind. thank you

i've got another question...

When i was attempting to check the spark on the plugs, i noticed the two top plugs were dry but the bottom ones were wet and kinda oily. any ideas?

thanks again for the previous input guys.
