1975 50 hp won't start

I'm trying to help a friend with no computer. He has an old 50 hp in nice condition. Put it in the water earlier in summer and idled it over to a dock. Shut it off to park the trailer. Got back to boat and it would not start or sputter. Wire harness on engine looked bad so he replaced that. Still wouldn't start. Engine has good spark at plug wires and plugs when they are out of the engine and its cranked. Has compression (as determined by fingers over plug holes). Gas or ether is sprayed in cylinders and still no sign of any combustion.

Any suggestions appreciated !!

Are the plugs getting fuel/wet?
First things first, test compression with tester, looking foe 100+psi,test spark with tester,7/16" blue snapping spark. If they're good, clean carbs and if necessary rebuild.

Dont remember if plugs were wet. Spark looks strong. Why no sputtering with fluid shot in cylinders? Will check compression but experience has been if it feels sufficient, it usually is enough to do something. Will do the tests tho. thank you.
