"my prolem is no 2 piston is not going, motor runs ok on one cylinder.sometimes it tries to cut in every now and then. i have swapped over the coils and still only runs on the top cylinder,i have got compression cleaned the points and reset them, i do have a very weak spark and the overspeed has checked out ok can anyone give me some info thanks"

"Since you've swapped the

"Since you've swapped the coils, swap the condensers also. A failed condenser will result in weak ignition. You might also look into the following.

(Magneto Armature Plate)
(J. Reeves)

If the armature plate has a a loose fitting, wobbling motion (the plate that the points, coils etc are attached to), it is usually caused by a slightly worn support ring. This allows the point setting to change erratically as the armature plate turns.

The cure is to remove the armature plate so that the support which is attached to the powerhead with 4 screws is visible. Then, with a screwdriver and hammer, or some tool of your choosing, and looking straight down at the support ring, make an indentation at what would be called the 12, 3, 6, and 9 O'clock positions. Install the armature plate and check for a smooth turning wobble free movement.

You may need to do that procedure a few times to obtain the proper fit (not too tight, not too loose), but it's worth the effort.

"Pat.... The flywheel nut on the 40hp models must be torqued to 105 foot pounds. Any less will result in exactly what you have encountered, a sheared flywheel key. Before re-installing the flywheel with a new factory specified key (307480), make sure that you clean up the tapers of both the flywheel and the crankshaft.

The points can be set by simply aligning the flywheel key with the fiber rubbing portion of the points that slides against the crankshaft lobe. Set the points so that a .020 gauge slides thru but a .022 will not."
