1975 40 hp evinrude driver coil

Re: 40 hp evinrude driver coil

What is the model # of the motor. Exactly how are you testing this ---------------On the bench / still on the motor------------------What makes you suspect the driver coil.

Re: 40 hp evinrude driver coil

Model 40554C. I have no fire on the top circuit. The bottom is ok (I think) I had an ohm meter checking for resistance. At no time did I get an open circuit, even when I broke the points. I took the blue wire loose from the points and still had a circuit. The other cuit opened when I opened the points. I did get the motor started previously but I think it was only was running on one cylinder.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: 40 hp evinrude driver coil

It has only one driver coil for both cylinders--------------------------Look for a bad coil or bad / dirty points.----------This ignition system is a liitle different from a " normal " magneto.

Re: 40 hp evinrude driver coil

I will change both sets of points and condensers and then go from there. It looks like it would not hurt and is relatively inexpensive. Thanks for the help. It may take a few days.

If I can remember correctly, the biggest probs they had with those ignition systems back in those days was, miss adjusted points (they had to be right on) and worn and sloppey mag plates.

Re: 40 hp evinrude driver coil

Some one (previous) disconnected and I am just now getting rewired. I only wired coils and points for now. I can get the engine to start but only by priming the top cylinder. When it is running is runs fairly good, but when I kill the engine and want to restart it, it won't go. The top plug is dry and I have to prime again.

It doesn't spit or pop. I have cleaned the carb and am just wandering if I should taker a look at the reeds while I am that close.
