I have a 1975 135hp v4 that has been giving me problems. The timing plate does not move freely (hangs up). I have had plate off and cleaned up under plastic retaining ring, the grease?was old and sticky,so I removed all the old grease and used a spray lube there. Motor ran fine for 2 hrs,but plate started to stick again. I also cleaned up shift/throttle arm on side of motor,it to was hanging up. Any suggestions on how to keep this plate from hanging up,I know it has to move freely to get proper timing/carb sync. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Use anti corrosive grease on the brass bushing of the timer base only... use oil and nothing but oil on the nylon bearing. Make sure that the groove and surrounding area for the nylon bearing is absolutely clean.

The major cause of timer base sticking is that one or more of the four retaining clips is slightly too tight, pressing down on the nylon bearing. The cure is to insert a very thin washer under the offending clip or bend it up just enough to eliminate the friction.

Thousands of parts in my remaining stock. Not able to list them all. Let me know what you need and I'll look it up for you. Visit my eBay auction at:

Thanks for the info Joe,I did notice that nylon bushing was a little tight when all four clamps were tightened.i tried rotating it when tightening down clamps. Can same grease be used for the throttle/shift linkage also? When I had the cables and linkage off it did seem a bit stiff on movement, the spring inside of hub in between the two pieces of arm seemed ok. I will try your suggestions and post back when I'm done. Thanks again Joe for your hep.
