"I just bought this boat it's a 1975 Winner Tri-hull with a 120 hp mercruiser, the owners had and used it every year for the past 15 but the last two years they had their mech. go through and get it ready but never took it out. I siphoned most all of the old gas out and dumped in a fresh 5 gal. can. After alot of cranking it finaly started but will only idle. If you try to trottle up it stalls out and spits and sputs till you pull back to idle."

"Does it do this after it is warmed up? Mine is very slow to warm up and doesn't like being cold.

Look in the carburator (engine off and cold), is the choke set? Goose the throttle and check the choke again. Is it set now? It should be.

Hold the choke open so you can see past it. Have someone else pump the throttle lever a few times (engine off!) and see if you can see fuel being squirted into the carb. You should."

"Thanks, I got ahold of the guy they had work on it. He said last time they brought it to him he spent 3 days trying to figure out why it would't run, ended up being the small wire that hooks to the base or the dist. In the process before he found that he went through the carb and put a new choke on it and told them next time they take it out give him a call and he would go with and re-adjust everything but due to health issues they never took it out again so he came over and set the choke and mix screws the best he could in my driveway but said beings it hasn't seen water in 2 or 3 years the best thing to do is fill it up with some fresh gas, add some sea-foam and take it out and run it for a while to shake the cobwebs loose, then reset everything out on the water when its warmed up good. Does that sound about right to anyone?"

Also check to see if the distributor advance hasn't gotten stuck with sludge or rust. Especially if it idles fine but won't throttle up. If they sit for a while that's just one thing in plenty that will need shaking loose.

"PugetSounder must have a newer boat than Bill and I. In boats of our vintage, having things "shaking loose" is not something we look forward to.
