1974 thunderbolt 500 50hp

Bot this motor used I finally got it running prob hadn’t ran in year I replaced the impeller now all I get out of the pee hole is smoke. I have know idea what’s going on

Was the old impeller broken apart? Could be some bits in there plugging the supply line up to the powerhead. Did it pump water before? Has it been overheated? You can tell because things will be melted that are bolted to the head.
