"Being an owner of this era drive I can help with a few things. First off, get a Factory OMC Repair Manual and a Parts Catalogue. Second, locate some sources for parts. This website is one and there are others most prominently Ebay. If you want to get familiar with your drive, acouple of things you can do. With the books mentioned, check the upper and lower drive oil for condition, check the Ball Gears for excessive wear and do a pressure and vacumn check for leaks. Remove the drive, and replace the Impeller and housing. The last one is important one thing because of the job it does but will also get you an insight into the condition of the Split Shaft that connects the Impeller Unit to the Upper Gearcase. All of the above will give you a Snapshot of the General condition of the drive unit itself but is by no means the end all. Just a place to start. Hope this helps you get started. Got to be better then the Previous Posts."
