Motor has been stored for years and I want to change the water pump impeller. I got the lower unit to drop about 3/4 inch but it's stuck.
Can't go down or up! I don't know how to "disconnect" the shift rod or even if I have to. Does anyone have experience with this problem?

You need to remove a bolt near the bottom of the carburetor ( 5/8" wrench required ) then seperate the bell-crank to disconnect the shift rod.

Thanks racerone. I know exactly what your saying! Does that pesky (approx 21" Lg) shift rod come down and out with the lower unit?

Yes it does, and don't bend it. The two worst things about installing the lower unit is stabbing the two water lines' guide tubes, and re-fitting the shift bell crank. They didn't give you much room to get your fingers in and to swing a wrench. Use caution on the lubing drive shaft splines. Use a little bit of grease on the splines but don't get any on the top, end face, of the shaft. The O-ring on the shaft, near the splines, will offer resistance with removing and installing the lower unit and my give the impression of it being stuck.

Well, I successfully removed the lower unit (after disconnecting shift rod). Discovered that I mangled the end of one water tube due to my ignorance yesterday!! Now what to do? Are the water tubes replaceable? How do they come out?
