1974 Evinrude Hustler Reverse Shift

How much force should it take

How much force should it take to press the shift rod down to engage reverse with the lower unit off the motor and the oil drained from the case. It seems to take a lot of presseure before reverse is engaged. Is it that much easier with the engine runnning and the prop turning to engage reverse? Before I reassemble the motor I want to make sure the it is operating correctly.

Thanks for the reply. I guess it is fine. It just seemed like a lot of force to apply with the little lever that sits (inconveniently) under the block.
