Hi folks: I need alittle help – OK, maybe a lot. My son andI are trying to get a 1974 Evinrude Fastwin 15 HP running and have a few issues:
1. The original water pump appears to have a metal housingand the new one is plastic. The newwater pump came with a single-lip seal that appears to press-fit into the topof the new plastic housing, similar to the original. The lower unit seal kit came with adouble-lip seal that looks like it would fit over the top of the new plasticwater pump housing if the press-fit seal were not installed. If this seal were used, I’m not sure how wellit would remain in place since it just slides over the top of the new waterpump. Since it is a double seal, itseems like it might seal better. Anysuggestions?
2. The original water pump housing appears to bemetal and more substantial than the new plastic one; is it advisable to use thenew impeller, new O ring and new seal in the old housing? The old water pump housing liner appears tobe in good shape as is the bottom plate. Any suggestions?
3. The water pump kit came with two water tubegrommets, one like the one shown in the service manual, and one with anextended top, that would go up further on the water tube. Which should I use?
4. Can the drive shaft seals (two seals, back toback) be removed with the driveshaft in place? In the alternative, can the driveshaft be removed, the seals replaced, andthe driveshaft reinstalled without any internal parts getting out of alignment?
5. Replacement of the shift rod O ring appears tobe difficult and requires special tools. If I do not attempt replacement of the O ring, is this likely to leakand cause water to get into the gear case?
Thanks everyone for your help.
Richard
