this is a longshaft motor that has run super for years. I would like to make it a shortshaft to be able to use it more. I have access to a 1969 evinrude 6hp shortshaft lower case with shorter drive shaft. I think this '69 case will fit, and i should be able to shorten the water tube, but I am having problems finding a gear shift rod the proper length. Can the original shift rod be shortened to work? This motor is so reliable, I hate to part with it to get somebody else's shortshaft that I know nothing about. Any comments would be appreciated before I consider tearing this motor down. Thanks!

Yes, cut the top of the shift rod off exactly 5 inches.

Now, dress up the cut porion to get rid of the jagged edges and round off the top edge somewhat to look like the one you just cut off.

Hold the short cut off portion alongside the shift shaft so that you can observe where you need to cut a shift bolt groove with a rat tail file. Note that the groove does not need to be all the way around the newly cut shift rod... it just needs that groove where the bolt will be.

That'll do it.
