1974 evinrude 50 hp

i have a 1974 evinrude 50 hp..

i have a 1974 evinrude 50 hp..it starts and idles good but when you go to shift into gear it dies unless you just move it a little bit into gear and let it sit for a minute then move the throttle further into gear but when u get it in gear it runs fine if ne ones had any idea what it could be i would greatly appcriate it thank you

we adjusted the idle so that it idled higher and it still does the same thing
