1974 Evinrude 50 hp outboard overheating

New member
bought boat with subject motor last year, had to replace water pump. troubleshooting this year, pump does not appear to be pushing water up to cool the engine, even while in neutral. Water level in test drum is high enough for pump to work, but no evidence of water up on the head. Any suggestions?
 
In the test drum, if the water is 3" or 4" above the joint where the lower unit meets the long exhaust housing (water above water pump), and you suspect that the pump is not supplying water to the powerhead.... drop the lower unit, dismantle the pump and find out why.

Thanks for the tip. A couple of other things i noticed too: I pulled the cover plate off and then pulled the thermostat and pressure valve out. Then funneled water through each hole, only to have the water come back out the other hole. Is that normal? or is that an indication that the outflow (down) tube is blocked? Note: last year when i had the lower unit off to replace the pump, i used air and water to flush out the inflow and outflow tubes. Had some debris. Another fifteen minutes of flushing and no debris. But yet this year, as stated above, no evidence of water to the head.

Sorry to say that I really don't personally remember. Hopefully another memeber will jump in here with the answer.
