I have a chance to buy a 1974 25 hp evinude from a co worker.
it's in fair shape and reportedly runs good. It's a pull start with a newer plastic tank. What's the approx. value? Any problems or quirks with this model? What about fuel/oil mix ratio? Thanks for any help.

Value is a relative thing. Is it the only good used motor within 200 miles or are there lots????Does it come with warranty???A dealer might ask $700 with a 30 day warranty. Some dealers might ask $900 with one year warranty. Warranty is an important consideration with service work costing $80.00 / hr . If you can do the work yourself then a $200.00 motor is always a good deal. That 22 cubic inch motor was basically the same from 57 to 77 so it is a proven design. There are lots of used parts available ( depending on where you are )and lots of new part in stock at good dealers as well.

"Thanks ikia.
Ironically the price is $200. So, as i suspected it is a good buy. Glad to hear the history on the engine is long and proven. I live in northern Michigan so the area is surrounded with lakes and boating so parts avail. should be fine. I also do most of my own mechanical work which makes that good running 25hp at $200 sound really good to me. This should be a 50:1 mix right?
Thanks again,ikia."

50:1 yep. I have a 1975 25 Johnson on my inflatable. They are nice motors. I think you'll like it.

"Thanks to all for the info on this motor. Still going through eval. before I pay for it and have noticed that the seal between the bottom of the motor housing and the very top of the lower unit is shot. Pieces have disappeared and the housing is pretty wobbly resulting in a lot of vibration on the entire housing when running. My question is, where can I get a seal and how hard is it to replace it? Does the engine have to be removed from the chassis to access the gasket/seal area?
I'm not scared to work on it but would appreciate any advice on the best way to go about this. Thanks to all and I gotta say this site is the greatest thing I have found for a guy like me who likes to do his own work (my wife calls it puttering). Thanks again."
