I have this outboard that I am trying to get back to being reliable. It seems like there may be a few different issues going on that I am trying to figure out.
The motor seemed to be loosing power, then one day when I was out on the water trying some different trouble shooting items it would no longer shift into gear. Well let me rephrase what was happening. It would go into forward and reverse, but there would be no movement. At one point it would only go in reverse (meaning actually moving the boat), then that stopped as well.
This weekend I started to take it apart to see where the issue of not going into gear may be. I took off the cover plate and the shifter linkage seemed to be just fine and in tact. I pulled the bottom off to check the gears and everything seemed to be ok, no teeth missing etc. However I wasnt able to turn the drive shaft by hand or with a pair of pliers (the shaft that runs through the length of the motor to the gears). When I pulled off the water pump, one of the fins was broken off (that was probably what was making the shaft hard to turn). It seemed like the water pump was working and maybe that was the issue for the reduced power (more on that in a minute). But I am curious if that would have had been the reason for the boat not moving when put into gear. Could that little fin stop the drive shaft from turning by being stuck against the other fins? It actually wasnt in the spot where it broke, it is like it jumped into the space between 2 good fins.

When I took the prop off I noticed there are 2 key way bars. And now that I am not near the motor I am not sure if this should be 1 long one that goes through the shaft or if these should be 2 separate ones?
At one point I messed around with my fuel pump and broke the little screw. I did have a replacement but I am not sure if I damaged it. I did this during the low power time on the lake, however. So unless it wasnt an issue before and it didnt seem to get any worse after I replaced the screw.
The carb probably does need to be cleaned/rebuilt. I will tackle that as well.
I checked the compression (best I could, it was hard to pull on the stand I have) I got like 102 on the top and 105 on the bottom. A little low it seems but it is a 1974 so at least it is over 100 I guess. The top plug looked pretty good but the bottom looked to be a little rich.
Based on this info, I think I do need a carb rebuild (not sure which jet would affect the bottom plug being rich?). Obviously a new pump impeller/rebuild kit. Probably need to replace the fuel pump to be safe.
I guess my question is, with the water pump breaking like it did, could that contribute to the low power and not moving? Or are the keys in the propeller supposed to be 1 instead of 2? Or is there something else I am completely missing and need to investigate?
