1974 Evinrude 15 throttle question

Evinrude 15 runs

"Hello...

Evinrude 15 runs well in spurts then sputters (help with my previous post would still be appreciated). I am still struggling with this motor; bought a 1974 manual and am going through it. No mechanical knowledge and 10 thumbs but it might be a good winter project. Question: I noticed when motor is not running right, there is a limited range of movement on the throttle handle and I can't turn it very far. When running well, I can turn the throttle a lot farther. Chicken-egg question...does it run well when the throttle is not locked for some reason? Or, does the throttle unlock when it fires up and runs well?"

"it is a possibility, that u have a loose coil, under flywheel....i would def ck that...there is nothing to mess w/ur engine's running, other than neutral safety, detents, and a metal piece to keep u from throttling up,on bottom of timer plate."

"Thanks...

Should the throttle have the same range of motion always? Does it vary for any reason? Or only if something is periodically blocking it. If throttle range makes a difference, it seems I have trouble after trailering the boat or running it. Could something be shaking loose? I'll try to check the suggestion above...I appreciate the help."

"The throttle has a safety loc

"The throttle has a safety lock when it is in neutral only. When in neutral you will notice the range of throttle turn is reduced from what it is when in gear. With the motor cover is off you should be able to see the mechanism better. You don't need to have the motor running to observe this safety stop. It is there to make sure you do not over-rev it when it is in neutral without a load.

That being said, when the motor is running and in gear, there should not be any limitation to your throttle operation. If there is, you must have another problem. I am assuming that when you say you are having a throttle problem, you mean that the throttle arm will not turn like it should as opposed to not getting more revs. out of your motor when you turn the throttle. The latter is a completely different problem."
