"Been a while since I had a motor that uses shear pins but I now have a 74 25hp evinrude model 25402. The shear pin on it when I bought it is a 2 piece pin made of some sort of light metal. Is this correct or did someone jam the handiest thing in place for a quick fix? It took me back to the days of using my Dad's 9 hp West Bend Chrysler for which he kept a few pieces of brass brazing rod with the flux scraped off cut to size to use as shear pins. Kind of a chuckle looking back but they did work very well and never showed any damage to the prop slot or the prop shaft.

Also still hoping someone can help give me advice on replacing the lower motor housing seal part # 0308292 for this Evinrude motor.

This site is fun. I find myself reading all kinds of entries just for the heck of it and seeing if I can diagnose the problems in question before I read the responses from the experts. Thanks, Thanks, Thanks!!!"

"Is it too much to expect to be able to troll with this motor on a 14ft alum boat? Motor runs great but stalls with increasing frequency when trolling. Usually restarts easily but eventually gets very difficult to restart. I've had to give it a small shot of starting fluid to get it going. Last time out I had brand new plugs in it and after stalling twice, it was starting fluid time. The original plugs when I bought this motor recently were NGK plugs and were a few years old. These seemed better than the new Champions That fouled within an hour and a half on my most recent outing. As an aside, this is consistent with my experience with Champion plugs in nearly every 2 stroke I've ever owned. They seem to foul and die out quickly. Any comments on this? Anyway, is this fouling and stalling most likely related to plugs? Fuel/oil mix? I'm running 50:1. Or could it be a carb issue. More info on motor behavior. While trolling it seems to run smoothly with no missing and when it stalls it is with out warning. It simply stops. No spitting, no sputtering. I realize this is a rambling lengthy question. I'm just looking for some pointers on this problem. Thanks for any help."

This motor will troll all day

This motor will troll all day long ---IF IT IS IN GOOD SHAPE----- So make sure that you have spark that will jump a gap of 1/4" or more.Make sure there is a good working thermostat in it.

"Thanks for responding ikia. I recall from a previous response that you have the same engine except for it being a 1975. Spark is good. MOtor never seems to miss. I realize it is very hard to diagnose something like this in print. I guess I'm wondering about different possible causes such as, if a carb not atomizing fuel stream properly can cause poor combustion and excessive loading. Was I sold the wrong plugs?
The ngk plugs were b6s. The champions were j4n I think. The thermostat suggestion didn't occur to me. How, by affectiing operating temp does the stat affect combustion? This may sound like a stupid question but I'm willing to sound dumb in exchange for a solution. I'm wondering about using something to slow my trolling speed like a trolling plate or someting similar so that I can keep the rpms slightly higher to avoid fouling. What do think?
Again, any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Scott."

"Well now, a motor without a thermostat will run cold.Fuel to vaporize properly needs heat and where can it get heat from a cold motor??? Like I said if the motor is in proper tune it will idle all day long , no problem."

Thanks ikia.

Thanks ikia.
I'm here under my new user name to say thanks for the response. Also found out I was sold the wrong champion plugs. Will try it out soon with the right ones. Where can I see a schematic showing the t-stat? Probably going to go through the carb soon just to be thorough. Motor sat 3 years before I bought it.
