1974 25hp johnson lower unit help

Ok, need help! I have a 1974 25hp Johnson outboard model number 25R74

I thought removing the lower unit would be the easiest part, turning out to be the hardest..... I have 2 sets of 4 -9/16" bolts ... one set removes the actual lower unit and the set above that removes the "extension sleeve?" It's just a hollow aluminum shell about 12" long ....
After struggling and removing both sets of bolts I found out I need to disconnect the shifter rod well the only way to get to it is above the top set of bolts there is a tiny little plate held on with two screws that I can remove and I can see where to disconnect the shifter rod.
My worry is since it's up in there how hard is it going to be to slide it back together when I can't get to that little piece to line up the shifter rod so I'm kind of scared of loosening up those bolts.

I will take some pictures tonight when I get homeas for the actual lower unit itself I took a part the propeller and the 6 screws that held everything together and I actually looked at the gears itself and everything almost look brand new! I cleaned up the housing and put everything back together just waiting to figure out how to remove that shifter rod without screwing something up Thanks

You have to REMOVE one of the screws at the connecter to drop the lower unit.-----It is not hard to put it back up there !!-----------Just take it apart and repair the lower unit.------------When the time comes to put it back up , then you ask for the tips on how to assemble.------Nothing to it !

Does not matter at all.----------But sometimes folks think that you have to " loosen " one of the screws.------You need to REMOVE one of the screws.-------------Note---- when you are ready to assemble you need to ask before damaging your fine motor and parts.
