1973 omc 140 transom seal

Hello,

Recentley purchased a 1973 Starcraft Capri tri hull. First thing to replace is the transom boot. I have no prior experience with sterndrive, and was told to make sure the boat was in reverse, before removing lower end. Is this true??? thanks
