1973 Mercury 1500 Water Pump

Hello, has anyone had to replace the water pump base on a 1973 1500, the one with the shim(s) right beneath the water pump base? I have read 2 different manuals and the procedure does mention the shims and how to check the gap. I talked with one tech and he said (basiclly) just reuse the old shim and put it back together.

Any thoughts?

There should be no need to replace the base ( seals maybe )--------------------If you must replace it,you measure the old part and compare to the new ( depth micrometer ) then shim accordingly.

Ok, I will find out if they are different, the new base should be here later today.
