I have a 73 Johnson 9.5 and it goes into reverse just fine but not into Forward. How can I adjust the shifter to get into forward? or am I looking into the wrong thing?

"It may be the adjustment screw is loose by the shift lever detent screw. Find it by standing on the starboard side looking down the shift lever shaft. It'll be a slotted screw head through a curved slot. See if thats loose, or has slid in that slot, put the motor in neutral, then move the shift lever till the screw is in the middle of the slot. Work the shifter, if it works, tighten her down. You may have to find the spot where it shifts in both directions, because it will slip in one direction or the other if its not set in the center. It's the first thing I'd check. If thats not it, you may be looking at a shift dog."

"Check the coupler between the upper and lower sections of the shift rod. If you had the gearcase off and did not completely remove the coupler's screw, the screw will not fit into the grooved section of the shaft and the shaft will be set too long."

Now

ok its pumping water..

Now its not going into forward gear. I adjusted the shifter in both direction and it goes into reverse great. Some times I am able to get it into forward but it jumps off.

I opened the lower unit and the dog looks good from the outside. its not worn and the top of the dog is flat. since i have not seen the dog off I cant tell if the inside is damaged. Does it have gears on the inside?

"Walter, I almost forgot, I checked the coupler and the screw is in there correctly. In fact I had to remove it to take the lower unit off for the impeller and I made sure that it was in there correctly..."

ok guys I am having a heck of a time finding a shift dog for my engine... can anyone point me in the right direction? part number? Price?

Johnson 1973 9.5

"You will need to get the clut

"You will need to get the clutch dog from a J/E/BRP dealer, or from a salvage yard. The part number is 377458, now superseded by 329795.

You can turn the dog around and use it for forward until you find a new one."

"Hold off on buying the parts

"Hold off on buying the parts just yet. Test the lower end by operating the shift rod by hand. Does it shift both forward and reverse? Turn the drive shaft by hand clockwise due to impeller. If it does shift by hand, that means that it has to be a problem in the shifting linkage between the lever and shift rod in the lower end."

"here is an update. I started

"here is an update. I started to look for a shift dog and a forward gear when I came across a lower unit. Can you believe it!

Yes, according the the owner it shifts fine. The person that has it blew the powerhead and now has no use for the lower unit. Im getting it for $40. I should get it next week. I will keep you all posted...

and thanks for your help thus far..."

"Excellent find, but remember

"Excellent find, but remember it's a used lower end. Consider changing the impeller or the whole water pump to assure peice of mind for a couple of years. I'd change the lower end lube, then check for water after it's been run. Other than that, some grease on the end of the driveshaft splines, bolt 'er on and give it a shot."

"Thought I'd give you all

"Thought I'd give you all an update... Well I guess I got really lucky with my purchase... the lower unit came with a new water pump and seals.. changed the lower unit oil, installed it and OFF I WENT!!

The engine runs good and the lower unit shifts perfectly! not bad for the $$$$. Now I will look into a tuneup and enjoy some fishing with my son...

thanks again for all of your advise and help..."
